back in the 13th Century, in the land now we call Turkey, the poetry of Jelaluddin Rumi spread far and wide... and continues to spread. Rumi recited his poems in Persian, the sophisticated language of the educated city-dwellers. There was at that time a young man from the country named Yunus who was inspired by Rumi to create personal Sufi poetry of his own. Young dervish Yunus was sent off by his Sheikh to wander the Turkish country-side. Reflecting on his spiritual quest in this Turkish vernacular, his style is simpler than Rumi's and more direct. His earnest sincerity is tempered by an ironic sense of humor, and the results are irresistible. To this day, all kinds of people in Turkey recite verses of Yunus Emre - both secular humanists and Islamic Sufis. Yunus inspired a Turkish dervish folk tradition of poetry and music which was thrived for 700 years and flourishes in our times. And yet, Yunus Emre has been virtually unknown outside of Turkey... until now.
